NeurostarTMS is an approved and effective therapy for depression. At Oregon TMS we have adopted the cutting edge Neurostar technology that has allowed thousands of people to regain control of their life. Neurostar. Developed by Neuronetics, Inc. – a Pennsylvania based company that for nearly two decades has led the world in technology for neuromodulation – Neurostar is an electromagnetic coil designed to correct under-active brain activity. To date providers have delivered over three million Neurostar treatments.

There are proven advantages to the Neurostar TMS technology.

Advanced contact sensing means that the full, accurate dose is delivered at every session. If the position of the coil is off by only a millimeter then up the half the dose may be lost. The lifting of depression following Neurostar TMS therapy has been proven to be long lasting. Many patients are in remission for over a year after treatment. Neurostar TMS has been well reviewed by more than 11 scholarly studies in 23 peer reviewed publications. Your personal brain map identifies targets for the TMS magnetic signals. One of the major studies published describes the treatment: “All treatments were delivered using the NeuroStar TMS Therapy system (Neuronetics, Inc.)... Motor threshold (MT) was determined over the left hemisphere at the initial session and used for determination of treatment intensity. An iterative, automated software-based mathematical algorithm (MT Assist, Neuronetics, Inc.) is integrated with this system for use in MT determination. External coordinates for placement of the coil over the treatment location are calculated by the device for a site 5 cm anterior from the MT location, along a left superior oblique plane. The standard treatment protocol described in the product user manual specifies stimulation at 120% of MT, pulse frequency of 10 pulses per second, and a cycle of 4 seconds on (active stimulation) and 26 seconds off (no stimulation). This system provides default parameters that generate 75 stimulation cycles, resulting in 3000 pulses per treatment session. While all clinicians initiated treatment with left-sided, high frequency stimulation, the treatment protocol could be modified for tolerability or logistical reasons, or as a consequence of clinician-determined variation in practice technique. Two hundred eighty (91.2%) patients received standard labeled treatment over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex only”.

How Does TMS Therapy Work?

TMS is a non-invasive therapy that uses new developments in technology to target the neurotransmitters that effect depression. When the targeted neurotransmitters are stimulated, connections between nerve cells are renewed and under-active brain regions return to normal function Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is utilizes an electromagnetic coil, similar to those used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Pulses in the coil placed on the skull induce an electric current at exactly the targeted brain regions. Sessions are painless and last about 20 minutes each. Afterward patients are free of side effects and are able to resume normal activities. Most patients report lasting relief from their symptoms for several months, and even years following the TMS treatment program. When we place the Neurostar appliance on your scalp, according to your digital brain map, magnetic pulses will electrically enervate brain cells that are identified as functioning poorly. When effectively activated, these neural connections tend to “learn” this healthy state, and throughout the sessions patients increasingly report an overall, often dramatic sense of increased well-being.
Your first session will map the electrical signals in your brain in order to accurately map your individual brain regions for therapy. While you are comfortably seated technicians will place a magnetic coil over the treatment area. The magnetic pulses generated will in turn induce an aimed therapeutic electric charge at those brain regions. This electrical re-enervation renews the function of under-active nervous system cells, essentially solving the imbalance correlated to mood, and restoring mental well-being. There is generally no discomfort during the therapy; side effects are mild and rare. Treatment is applied in a relaxed sitting position by the placement of the Neurostar device near your forehead. After locating the distinct brain area for treatment, and the initial stimulation session, patients return to the office regularly over 5 to 8 weeks. These appointments will last about 30 minutes. Following your session you can expect little or no side effects, and you will begin to notice improvements to your mood, outlook, and motivation.
