A Different Approach to Treat Depression and OCD

If you suffer from long-term depression that has not responded well to other treatments then you know how disabling the suffering can become. Many patients either despair, or they might consider some other more invasive treatment. Depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders are traditionally treated by talk therapy, antidepressants, and other drugs. When these interventions fail patients are often frustrated by the cycle of trying new prescriptions and their associated side effects, often with little or no improvement to their quality of life. TMS is an entirely different approach that has been clinically proven to be effective and safe. Depression has not been well understood in the past. Today the foremost theories point to imbalances in the depressed individual’s brain chemistry. TMS therapy is designed to correct this imbalance between various nervous system chemical messengers (neurotransmitters). TMS is a non-invasive therapy that uses new developments in technology to target the neurotransmitters that effect depression. When the targeted neurotransmitters are stimulated, connections between nerve cells are renewed and under-active brain regions return to normal function

What Is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an effective treatment for some cases of depression, OCD, migraines and other brain health conditions. TMS utilizes an electromagnetic coil, similar to those used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Pulses in the coil placed on the skull induce an electric current at exactly the targeted brain regions. Sessions are painless and last about 20 minutes each. Afterward patients are free of side effects and are able to resume normal activities. Most patients report lasting relief from their symptoms for several months, and even years following the TMS treatment program. In addition to the noninvasive nature of TMS, a major benefit to therapy is our ability to incorporate a digital graph of brain activity to form a unique “map” of each of our patient’s brains. This helps to diagnose and treat our patients in a very individualized manner; insuring that throughout the therapy that the exact region of the brain involved in depression or OCD is precisely targeted.
TMS has been approved by the FDA as a therapy for depression since 2008. In 2013 and 2018, respectively, the therapy was further approved for the treatment of migraine headaches and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Today there are numerous clinical trials being held in the United States that show great promise for those suffering from many other disorders. In Europe TMS has been in use for over 30 years and is currently also cleared to treat bipolar disorder, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, smoking cessation, PTSD, and some cases of schizophrenia. Medicare and most medical insurance plans provide coverage for TMS therapy.
In one study, published in the Journal of Depression and Anxiety, authors find “...improvement in functional status on a broad range of mental health and physical health domains … observed across the entire range of baseline depression symptom severity”. The study concludes that “These data confirm that TMS is effective” and that the “benefit is accompanied by statistically and clinically meaningful improvements in patient-reported QOL [quality of life] and functional status outcomes”.
